Show Ring Successes

We have had moderate success in the show ring. We are particularly proud of this fact because we don't have a "show string" of cattle. Our entries are pulled from the cow herd in time for whatever health requirements are necessary, hauled to the show, and what you see is what you get. We do not believe in over conditioning our cattle just to be more competitive. My long term goal is to convert more breeders to my style of showing, representing the cattle in the most open and honest way possible. It's probably a pipe dream.

2013 MAHA Spring Classic

We had a particularly gratifying win at the MAHA Spring Classic during the AHCA Annual Convention in June 2013. LEA Haaken, a really fine 2 year old, was taken into the ring for his first time showing ever. He went on to be named Senior Bull Reserve Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Bull. I am quite sure that Haaken was the only bull in his class that had actually been out breeding cows prior to his show ring debut. He is under lease to Skyler Anderson, who did a superb job showing him him off. Haaken was a little reluctant, at first, but warmed up to the experience quite quickly. It says a great deal about the disposition of these animals.

Haaken wasted no time moving around the ring.

I love this photo: Haaken obviously wondering what that strange purple thing is, and what it has to do with him.

LEA Willow winning Grand Champion Cow/calf with LEA Edith Cavell, right out of the cow herd.

A particularly gratifying win with LEA Dessa taking 2 year old Champion on grass and hay only.

Winning 2nd best pair of heifers in a huge class in the Jackpot with Dessa (immediately behind judge) and Deirdre. Again, all on grass and hay.

Deirdre winning Reserve Intermediate Heifer Calf, I particularly like this because we sponsored the banner.

Deirdre and Callie were a popular photographer's subject that year.

You can actually read the banner in this one.

LEA Wallis winning her division at the National Western Stock Show in Denver in 2004.

LEA Whirlwind winning her division at Denver the same year. Whirlwind went on to be the high-priced heifer at the sale that year.

We did have another successful trip to Denver this year. Although we ran in the middle of the pack during the Show on Friday, Thursday night's jackpot classes were a different judge and a different story. LEA Elektra and LEA Ekaterina made up the winning set for Best Pair of Females, and when we added LEA Elke, the trio was awarded Best Three Head. We didn't have an entry for the 3rd class, Best Pair of Bulls.

Elektra hidden behind Evan and Ekaterina showing just how correct she can stand winning Best Pair of Heifers in the Thursday night Jackpot classes.

The Sale on Saturday repeated the success of Thursday night's classes. LEA Ekaterina and LEA Elke tied for high-selling female, besting even the Grand Champion Female of the Show. LEA Elektra was not entered in the sale, and took the ride back to Michigan with us.

LEA Elke in the auction arena, tying for high selling Highland at the 23rd annual Highland Cattle Sale.
